A Journey Through Sound

I am Serban Calugar, born and raised in Targu Mures, Romania, in the heart of a diverse and multicultural Transylvania. Having followed my Jazz Composition studies in the Fontys Academy of Arts, in Tilburg, Netherlands, under the guidance of established arranger & composer Maino Remmers, I am now based in Bucharest, with close ties to Amsterdam.

Journey

A Passion for Music
from an Early Age

My musical journey began early on in childhood, when i received my first guitar at the age of 9, though i never pursued music professionally until the age of 19. As every teenager does, i went through phases of obssesion with rock, electronic, hiphop and ultimately jazz music. Those have led me to realise my career goal all along was music, thus discovering composition and arranging as my favorite topics.

Tartar Monks

Live Performance

I play several instruments including guitar, piano, vocals and bass, and I also do have performance experience, with a psychedelic rock band, Tartar Monks, that I played with in Romania for a few years. At the moment, I have my solo musical project, Monk, with which i'm set to release an album early next year.

Journey

My Musical Journey: Inspired by
Legends of Guitar and Composition

My main influences that formed and left a mark on me are guitar legends like Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John McLaughlin, historically crucial composers like Bach, Ravel, Stravinsky and Duke Ellington, but also visionary musicians like John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Charles Mingus. Modern music is something I am very well in tune with, being up to date with all the stylistic trends in any genre from pop, rock, hiphop and jazz to breakbeat, metal, middle eastern fusion and grunge.

Journey

Musical Influences from
Iconic Composers

Being still young, my goal is to learn and experiment as much as I can. I am open to any sort of wild ideas, but also any of the more typical gigs. I wish to create an extensive portfolio and establish myself as an aspiring artist wishing to break from the norm and explore possibilities in the world of writing and performing music.
